What Does PTAC Mean?
PTAC stands for packaged terminal air conditioner and is a type of self-contained heating and air conditioning system. Hotels, motels, senior housing facilities, hospitals, condominiums, apartment building and sunrooms are the most common places you’ll find these units. Most units are designed to go through a wall, because they have vents that allows for heat to sink in both inside and outside. When looking to install one of these units, we typically look to window walls and masonry walls. An installation usually requires the following: louvers, metal sleeve, heating coil, the PTAC itself and room enclosure.

How PTAC Units Differs from Window Units
PTAC units differ from a window unit in both efficiency and commercial components. A window unit hangs outside of a wall. It has vents on the side of the casing and cools the outside coil by drawing in air from the side vents. Whereas a PTAC has solid sides and is mounted flush to the wall. Since it is mounted, you can only see the grill from the outside. Most window units also do not have heat, whereas that is also a feature of many PTAC units. Get the best installation and repair of these PTAC units when you turn to NorWest.
Differences Between PTAC Units & Heat Pumps
Heat pumps and PTAC units can both heat and cool. But there are some differences in how they operate. Due to a reversing valve in the outdoor unit, a heat pump system works by extracting heat energy from outside air, even in extremely cold temperatures, and transferring the heat inside the home, where it releases the heat into the air. However, the efficiency of the heating pump is affected by the lower temperature.
Whereas PTAC units do not have this issue and can heat consistently when the temperatures drop. These units have vents that allows for heat to sink in both inside and outside and the temperature has little to no bearing on the performance of the appliance. Learn more about heat pumps and their use alongside PTAC units.
How To Troubleshoot PTAC Units
Many—though not all—Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTACs) come equipped with a self-diagnostic feature, allowing you to troubleshoot common issues without any technical expertise or special tools. By simply activating this built-in function, you can quickly determine whether your unit is operating properly.
Before using the diagnostic tool, it's important to reset your PTAC system, as this alone may resolve minor issues. If the problem persists, the self-diagnostic feature can help you pinpoint the source.
When you place the unit in diagnostic mode, it will automatically scan for issues and display an error code on the control panel. These codes serve as helpful indicators, guiding you toward a solution—whether it's a simple reset or a more specific issue that needs attention.
Your PTAC unit should come with a user manual that provides step-by-step instructions for running the self-diagnostic test. Follow the guide carefully, activate the feature, and allow a few minutes for the system to complete its scan. If an error code appears, refer to the manual to interpret it and determine the next steps.
If no code is displayed, it may indicate that the system is unable to detect the issue, and further troubleshooting or professional assistance may be needed. If you are experiencing issues regarding your PTAC units, please reach out to us today.
