A heating pump is a crucial element for any home. A typical air source heat pump system consists of two major components, which are an outdoor unit and an indoor air handler unit. Outdoor Unit: The outdoor unit contains a coil and a fan. The coil of this unit operates as either a condenser (when in cooling mode) or as an evaporator (when in heating mode). The fan blows outside air over the coil to facilitate the heat exchange.

Indoor Unit: The indoor unit is commonly referred to as the air handler unit. It also contains a coil and a fan. The coil acts as an evaporator when in the cooling mode or as a condenser when in heating mode. The fan is responsible for moving air across the coil and throughout the ducts in the home.

Refrigerant: The refrigerant is the substance that absorbs and rejects heat as it circulates throughout the heating pump system.

Compressor: The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant and moves it throughout the heating system.

Reversing Valve: The reversing valve is the part of the heat pump system that reverses the flow of the refrigerant. This allows the system to operate in the opposite direction and switch between heating and cooling.

Expansion Valve: The expansion valve acts as a metering device and regulates the flow of the refrigerant as it passes through the system. It allows for a reduction of pressure and temperature of the refrigerant.

Key Components of a Heat Pump System

Heating pump systems vary in both size and configuration. However, there are four main components that enable the heat transfer process to succeed and those components include are:

Evaporator Coil: The evaporator coil is responsible for absorbing heat into the refrigerant as it evaporates from a liquid state to a gaseous one. It acts as the heat collection point and gathers thermal energy to be moved elsewhere by the system. When in its heating mode, the evaporator coil is located outdoors. When in cooling mode, it is located indoors.

Compressor: The compressor is the "pump" in a heat pump system. It pressurized the refrigerant gas after it leaves the evaporator coil and increases its temperature. This prepares the refrigerant to release heat energy when it finally reaches the condenser coil. The compressor is powered by an electric motor and is the primary energy user in the full system.

Condenser Coil: The condenser coils releases heat energy. As the hot, pressurized refrigerant passes through the condenser coil, it condenses back into a liquid state and dissipates the heat in the process. In heating mode, the indoor condenser coil distributes heat into the home. When in the cooling mode, the outdoor condenser releases heat to the outside.

Expansion Valve: The expansion valve is responsible for reducing the pressure of the liquid refrigerant after it leaves the condenser coil. By regulating refrigerant flow back to the evaporator, it allows the refrigerant to evaporate. While doing so, it begins absorbing heat energy once again. Then a repeating cycle is what drives the heat transfer process.
